Motorcycle Cleaning Precautions

Avoid taking your motorcycle to a car wash or asking others to wash it unless absolutely necessary. While car washes seem to have complete tools and standardized operations, they often prioritize efficiency over thoroughness, potentially damaging spark plugs and wiring.

Always let the motorcycle engine cool down before washing. Using cold water to suddenly wash the engine and exhaust pipes can cause damage due to thermal expansion and contraction. This can damage oil seals, leading to engine oil leaks. Many motorcycle owners experience minor engine oil leaks due to this. It can also cause the chrome plating at the exhaust pipe and engine connection to peel off, oxidize, and rust.

It's best to avoid directly washing the headlights, handlebars, switches, exhaust pipe outlet (best to plug it), horn, spark plugs, air filter, and battery with water. These parts contain electrical components, and getting them wet can cause short circuits or leaks, leading to problems like malfunctioning lights, a non-functioning horn, failure to start, or poor performance. It's better to wipe these parts with a cloth.

When washing your motorcycle, be sure to thoroughly clean the underside of the engine and the radiator. A toothbrush and detergent are recommended for this; it's both aesthetically pleasing and allows for easy detection of engine oil leaks.

After washing, dry the entire motorcycle with a dry cloth, paying special attention to the switches, instrument panel, handlebars, spark plugs, and fuel cap. Make sure to remove the spark plug cap and shake it to remove any water inside the cap; otherwise, it may affect ignition.

After drying, start the motorcycle and let it idle for 5-10 minutes to drain water from the exhaust pipe. Then, drive at a moderate speed for a few minutes or let it air dry in a shaded area. Avoid direct sunlight.

After riding in the rain, always dry your motorcycle thoroughly, especially the exhaust pipe. With current pollution levels, rainwater is acidic, and this is a major cause of exhaust pipe deterioration. It's extra work, but it's essential for maintaining your motorcycle.

After cleaning, apply wax to the motorcycle body and polish it with fine sandpaper. Remember to re-lubricate the chain.
